Dark side of coal – Vattenfall, kolet, ansvaret

Vattenfall försöker sälja sin tyska brunkolsverksamhet. Vilka är de påtänkta köparna, tjeckiska EPH? Och vilka kan konsekvenserna bli vid en försäljning för lokalbefolkningen och klimatet i stort? Mindre känt är att Vattenfall också är en storimportör av stenkol från Colombia till sina verksamheter i Tyskland och Nederländerna. Två av dessa leverantörer Drummond samt Prodeco/Glencore anklagas för att ha finansierat illegala paramilitära grupper i Colombia.

Jag är stolt över att kunna bjuda in representanter från Lausitz i Tyskland och Colombia med mer detaljerad kunskap om den mörka sidan av Vattenfalls kolaffärer.

Maira Mendez, Colombia
Maira is the daughter of the coal worker and trade unionist Candido Mendez, who was murdered by paramilitary forces of the Juan Andres Alvarez front in 2001. She will speak on behalf of many victims of violence in the region.

Matti Nedoma, Germany
Matti is a lawyer of the Rösch group, a company from Proschim, Lusatia (Germany), which offers a lot of jobs in sustainable business sectors (e.g. Renewables). Vattenfall´s lignite mines threaten the future of the company. If the Welzow pit will be extended, Proschim would disappear and jeopardize the future of the company.

Joris van de Sandt, Netherlands
Joris is one of the authors of the report “The Dark Side of Coal – Paramilitary Violence in the Mining Region of Cesar, Colombia”. He works for the Dutch peace movement PAX.

Heffa Schücking, Germany
Heffa is the director of the German NGO urgewald and the author of a briefing on Vattenfall´s coal business, which presents the negative impacts of the company´s lignite and hard coal operations. She will present the briefing. In 2013 urgewald published the report “Bitter Coal” about coal imports to Germany (incl. Vattenfall).

Sebastian Rötters, Germany
Sebastian is a campaigner for coal and climate at urgewald. He was the co-author of “Bitter Coal” and the briefing paper.
