Igårkväll frigavs kvinnorna Consuelo González och Clara Rojas i en stor operation tagen på initiativ av Venezuelas president Hugo Chavez. De två kvinnorna har varit gerillan Farcs fångar i många år. Jag hoppas att Farcs frigivning kan ses som ett första steg mot en större fångutväxling mellan fångar/kidnappade som finns på båda sidor av konflikten i Colombia. Kidnappningar är en av de värsta aspekterna på kriget i Colombia.

Nästa steg måste förstås vara ett fredsavtal med syfte om ett slut på Latinamerikas äldsta konflikt.
Frigivningen kunde göras tack vare Hugo Chavez oförtröttliga engagemang. Förhoppningsvis kan han fortsätta att spela en roll för en fred i Colombia. Det som alla undrar nu förstås är vad Colombias hårdnackade president, Alvaro Uribe Velez, kommer göra. Är han beredd att förhandla?

Thank you Hugo Chávez, the tireless Venezuelan president, whose determined commitment and personal authority finally overcame all the obstacles which stood in the way of the liberation of Clara Rojas and Consuelo González de Perdomo! And thanks to all those who, in one way or another, contributed to this happy outcome.
This magnificent success opens a window of opportunity in favour of a resumption of dialogue between the guerrilla and the Colombian authorities with a view to a humanitarian agreement – including the liberation of Ingrid Betancourt and the hostages detained by the Farc, as well as that of the hundreds of guerrillas imprisoned in Colombia – and, beyond that, a political solution to the Colombian crisis.
This is proof that results are possible when clear and resolute political will is shown. Hope is renewed – it is now up to all to take their responsibilities.

Ce magnifique succès rouvre une fenêtre d’opportunité en faveur de la reprise du dialogue entre la guérilla et les autorités colombiennes, en vue d’un accord humanitaire – comprenant la libération d’ Ingrid Betancourt et les otages détenus par les Farc, comme de celle des centaines de guérilleros emprisonnés en Colombie – et, au delà, d’une solution politique à la crise colombienne.
La preuve est faite que des résultats sont possibles dès lors qu’une volonté politique claire et résolue se manifeste. L’espoir renaît, à chacun de prendre ses responsabilités.
