The several-thousand-year-old city of Hasankeyf, which lies in the Turkish part of Kurdistan, is threatened with obliteration. The Turkish state is planning a gigantic expansion of a dam and power generation system in Kurdistan, with the primary purpose of providing cheap energy to industries in western Turkey. The building of the dam at Ilusi, which the Turkish state intends to push through, will submerge Hasankeyf.
